Info About My Homeschool Art Classes

Not all classes are available at all times. See my schedule for what is currently being offered.

My classes are designed for middle to high school age. I have, however, had no problems with kids as young as 9 or 10 being in class with 15 and 16yo kids. Homeschooled kids are very supportive and accepting of one another! I've had a few moms join classes when space has been available.
When sending a request to be in a scheduled class, please include your contact phone number, the child's name and date of birth (will not be shared!) with which class you want them in. I will respond to let you know the child is on the list. If you don't receive confirmation from me, I don't have the child on the list.

I hold classes at my home in sw Layton. I will send you my address out when I put your child on my roster.

I like to have 6-8 kids in a class to make it worth my time. I tend to start new classes when current class sizes fall below 6. Classes with fewer than 6 students are subject to cancellation.

In case of inclement weather, please check news or Davis county schools web site. If Davis County schools are closed, I will not have class. Since my first class starts at 10am, I will not cancel or delayif there is only a delay in the school schedule. If you are uncomfortable with bringing your child due to weather at your home when my classes are scheduled, feel free to send me a message and I will do my best to make up missed artwork.  If I do need to cancel, we will shift the entire schedule for the remaining time in the semester.

My classes are very structured, however that doesn't mean there is no room for creativity. Some projects have specific parameters while others are more open to interpretation. Classes are appropriate for middle to high school kids, however, I adapt to individual needs (some kids get different instructions or reference material). Each class may have different needs, and different reference materials may be used.

Lessons generally consist of working with a specific media and techniques. I teach basic concepts, followed by a project that uses the skills covered. I do a lot of guided lessons and some guided projects. Lessons tend to build upon each other. I do classes in a specific order (especially Art 1, 2, &3). I use a variety of materials and choose quality materials for projects. Sometimes I start with lower quality materials so the kids can feel and see the difference as we move on to higher quality.

I charge a reasonable fee for each 8 week session- 1 class per week (Cost is adjusted for shorter sessions). All materials are provided for class work, with the exception of cake decorating class. Please pay with cash. I don't have a local bank, so cashing checks is difficult.

There is occasionally homework. I expect it to be completed and returned for me to see the completed work. Homework is sometimes class work that wasn't completed, sometimes homework is something that reinforces what we did in class. If I send supplies or equipment home for homework, I expect those items to be returned in good condition the following week for future use. If your child doesn't return homework materials, they won't have them for the next class.

Classes are 1.5 to 2 hours to allow plenty of time for slower workers and clean-up. I tend to keep the kids busy the entire time. I assign more extension work if they do finish on the early side (time allowing). Sometimes I just provide extra paper for them to draw independently after classwork is completed.

New Classes are scheduled as time becomes available. Most classes take place on Thursdays.

Since I'm a homeschooling mom, I do occasionally have a scheduling conflict or family emergency. I do try to avoid this, however, I do reserve the privilege of rescheduling classes if necessary. This has only happened a couple of times in the past 8 years. Once was for weather concerns.

I ask parents to sign a permission to photograph form. This is so I can take photos. I rarely do this, but share when I do.

I ask that you DO NOT show your children any class projects that they haven't done in my classes. The reason is that they might come into class with preconceived ideas of what we're doing, or how we'll do things. It is best for them to experience the class and projects as intended before they see how others' work turned out. I've had one student come to me with ideas for a future project, and I had to explain that her thoughts might not work with that particular project and that I couldn't go into detail because that was part of the class lesson. I had to just tell her to keep an open mind when she starts the class.

Once they have completed a class or project, you are welcome to show them what others have done. Parents are welcome to look at all of the projects.

Again, I ask that you DO NOT show your children any class projects that they haven't done in my classes.
